A Mancunian in Hanoi: Flavours, Hospitality, and Adventure

Published on 26 January 2025 at 16:15

Hi, it’s Ryan, your favourite Mancunian traveller. Hanoi holds a special place in my heart, not just because of its vibrant streets or incredible food but because it’s a city where I experienced some of the most genuine acts of hospitality and community. Let me take you on a personal journey through Hanoi’s food, drink, and culture, with stories that capture the city’s essence.

A Taste of Vietnamese Hospitality

One of my fondest memories of living in Hanoi was being invited into my neighbour’s home for dinner. It started with a casual conversation, and before I knew it, I was sitting on a small plastic stool, sharing a feast with the family. They insisted I try everything, from freshly cooked spring rolls to an unforgettable pork dish simmered in caramel sauce. The highlight of the evening was drinking rice wine with the family’s grandfather. He poured it into tiny cups, clinking glasses with a hearty “Mot, hai, ba, yo!” (One, two, three, cheers!). That moment perfectly encapsulated Vietnamese hospitality—warm, generous, and heartfelt.

Karaoke: A National Obsession

If you think karaoke is just a bit of fun, wait until you’re in Vietnam. Karaoke is a serious pastime here, and you’ll often see families, friends, and even colleagues packing into bars or private rooms to belt out ballads. Walking through the streets, it’s common to hear someone singing their heart out from a house or a karaoke bar. It’s not just entertainment; it’s a way to connect and celebrate life. I even joined in once—though my rendition of Oasis didn’t quite match the locals’ passion!

Tay Ho: The Expat Haven

Tay Ho, or West Lake, is the expat hub of Hanoi. It’s more expensive than other areas but offers a variety of international restaurants and cafes that cater to every craving. You’ll find everything from authentic Italian pizza to vegan smoothie bowls. The lake itself is a serene spot for a morning walk or coffee with a view. For those who crave diversity in their meals, Tay Ho is the place to be.

The Old Quarter: Where Tradition Meets Buzz

The Old Quarter is where Hanoi’s charm truly comes alive. It’s more touristic than Tay Ho but full of character. The streets are lined with late-night bars, clubs, and, of course, the famous bia hoi stalls. Bia hoi is fresh beer brewed daily, and at just pennies a glass, it’s the cheapest drink you’ll find. Pair it with a plate of noodles or fried tofu, and you’ve got a meal that’s both delicious and budget-friendly. If you’re looking for nightlife, this is the place to be—just be ready for the lively crowds.

The Rise of Cocktails in Hanoi

Hanoi’s cocktail scene has exploded in recent years, with trendy bars popping up across the city. One of my favourite spots is Top of Hanoi, a rooftop bar that offers stunning views of the city skyline alongside expertly crafted drinks. It’s a bit pricier than your average bia hoi, but the experience is worth it. Another hidden gem is Nấu Cocktail Bar, where innovative mixologists create drinks inspired by local flavours.

Street Food Adventures on Au Co Street

Au Co Street is a must-visit for foodies. This bustling street is lined with vendors serving up some of the best street food in the city. My go-to dish here is banh xeo, a crispy Vietnamese pancake filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. It’s served with fresh herbs and a tangy dipping sauce that ties it all together. The street food culture in Hanoi is second to none, and Au Co Street is a perfect example of that.

Football and Chicken Feet

As a die-hard Manchester United fan, I was thrilled to discover Puku Cafe, a 24-hour spot where you can catch live sports. Watching a match at 2 a.m. with other fans from around the world was an experience I’ll never forget. After the match, I even had a full English breakfast at 4 a.m. – because why not?

Playing football in Vietnam was another memorable experience. When I joined a local team, they invited me to try chicken feet after a game. Let’s just say it’s an acquired taste—imagine the texture of toenails. While it’s not something I’d try again, it was all in good fun, and the camaraderie made it worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

Hanoi is a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern trends. Whether you’re sharing rice wine with a neighbour, singing karaoke with strangers, or exploring the vibrant street food scene, every experience is filled with warmth and authenticity. From the expat-friendly vibe of Tay Ho to the bustling energy of the Old Quarter, Hanoi offers something for everyone.

If you’re planning a trip, embrace the chaos, savour the flavours, and don’t shy away from new experiences (even if it’s chicken feet!). Hanoi is more than a destination—it’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left. Cheers to unforgettable adventures in Vietnam!
