Alright, it’s Ryan here, your resident Moaning Manc Traveller, reporting from one of the most unexpectedly stunning places I’ve ever visited: Koh Phangan. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Koh Phangan? Isn’t that the Full Moon Party island where everyone paints themselves neon and dances till sunrise? Aye, it is…but it’s so much more than that.
A Tale of Two Islands
Koh Phangan has two very different sides to it, like a proper Jekyll and Hyde situation, but in the best way possible. On one side, you’ve got Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party madness, which is great if you’re up for that sort of thing. But the other side of the island? Absolute paradise. I’m talking about peace, serenity, and some of the best food I’ve ever had (and that’s coming from a bloke who’s skeptical about anything that doesn’t involve meat!).
The Food: A Meat Lover’s Vegan Awakening
Let’s start with the food because, as you know, I’m dead picky. I’ve always been a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, so the idea of diving into vegan and veggie cuisine didn’t exactly fill me with joy. But the restaurants here blew my mind.
One standout was The Rolling Pin – a bakery that does plant-based dishes so good I forgot they were vegan. Then there’s Orion Healing Centre, where I had a green curry that was nothing short of life-changing. The food on the quieter side of the island has this fresh, vibrant quality that’s hard to describe. Everything feels like it’s been plucked straight from the earth, and even this die-hard carnivore had to admit it was bloody brilliant.
A Jungle Adventure to Remember
While the peaceful side of the island had me zenning out, I couldn’t resist a bit of adventure. One night, I signed up for a jungle party, and let me tell you, it was one of the best nights out I’ve ever had.
Picture this: a 10-minute walk through a dimly lit jungle path with a guide, feeling like you’re off to meet some secret society. Then, the trees part, and you’re at this stunning resort by the sea, complete with a private beach and music pumping till 8 in the morning. It was surreal. The vibes were incredible, the music was banging, and the people were the friendliest crowd I’ve ever met.
Bars with Views and People with Heart
Koh Phangan isn’t just about parties or food; it’s about the people. The locals are some of the kindest, most welcoming folks I’ve ever met on my travels. They’re always up for a chat and genuinely want you to have a great time. And the bars? Unreal.
There’s Amsterdam Bar, perched high on a hill with a view that makes you want to pinch yourself. Sunset drinks there are a must. Or Three Sixty Bar, where you can take in panoramic views of the island with a cold beer in hand. These places made me feel like I was living in a postcard.
The Roads and the Risks
Now, a quick word of caution for anyone thinking of renting a motorbike here: think twice. While I love a bit of adventure, the roads in Koh Phangan can be brutal, especially after a storm. I’m not the most experienced rider, and even I found it dicey. If you do decide to give it a go, take it slow and be careful. It’s worth it for the freedom, but it’s not without its risks.
A Place That Stole My Heart
Overall, Koh Phangan has a special place in my heart. It’s not just the beauty of the island or the fantastic food; it’s the way it makes you feel. Whether you’re partying till dawn or finding your inner zen, there’s something about this place that gets under your skin in the best way.
So, if you’re heading to Thailand, don’t just write Koh Phangan off as the Full Moon Party island. Venture beyond the neon paint and discover its quieter, magical side. You might just find yourself falling in love with it, just like I did.
Cheers for reading, and until next time, happy moaning!
